Over the past two decades, the Linux Foundation has evolved from stewarding a single project (the Linux kernel) to enabling hundreds of open source communities through its “foundation-as-a-service” model, spanning both horizontal technologies like cloud, blockchain, and security, as well as vertical initiatives across automotive, finance, telecom, energy, public health, and more. The updated 2025 paper examines these industry-specific initiatives and how some of the world’s most established sectors have transformed themselves by embracing open source collaboration.
