Celebrating 11 Years of OpenDaylight: A Journey of Growth and Innovation

The past year marks a significant milestone for the OpenDaylight project as it celebrates its eleventh anniversary, a testament to its resilience and impact within the open networking ecosystem. Featured in the 2024 LF Networking Annual Report, OpenDaylight continues to thrive, delivering impactful advancements and fostering a strong community of contributors.

Here are the highlights from OpenDaylight’s journey in the past year:

  • ODL issued its 21st release, “2024.09 Scandium,” which includes:
    • Java 21
    • Lightweight Netty-based RESTCONF Northbound
    • OpenAPI is now highly scalable
    • Preparatory work for better Kubernetes (K8s) integration
  • Community is focused on the 22nd release, “2025.03 Titanium,” with:
    • Migration from Akka to Apache Pekko ready
    • RFC8639 Subscribed Notifications being worked on
    • Datastore persistence and scalability improvements planned

Looking ahead, the community is focused on bringing:

  • BGP/LS container images still planned
  • Developments continue on optical network control to extend support for the most widely adopted standards
  • Additional support from downstream consumers continues to be of critical importance

This incredible journey showcases OpenDaylight’s commitment to advancing SDN technologies and meeting the evolving needs of the networking community.
