LFN User Story: Netgate uses FD.io VPP to Turbocharge University Hybrid Learning Experience

Higher education institutions are looking for ways to reinvent themselves as tuition and enrollment continue to decline. One key objective is to provide real-world computing infrastructure, real-time access to data, the Internet, and other resources to students via their device of choice – be it a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Connected classrooms, efficient distance learning, open access to campus digital libraries, anytime/anywhere network connectivity and response times are all now table stakes for a modern educational experience. However, high-speed network connectivity is required to fulfill these needs. Given ever-present budget pressure, IT departments struggle to upgrade networks to meet the expectations of the extended campus community. Adding insult to injury, students empowered by social media can spotlight poor IT performance and expose subpar learning experiences which can impede an institution’s ability to recruit top students.

FD.io VPP-based Solution

Netgate and Intel’s Arkansas State University Three Rivers (ASUTR) user story discusses these challenges in detail and lists the alternative solutions that were considered. In the end, a vendor solution based on FD.io Vector Packet Processing (VPP) – an open source product created under the Linux Foundation Networking banner – was the answer owing to its extraordinary performance, scalability, and overall solution economics.
